Pintamaps Món

Paint the world with your colors

The geographical names that appear in Pintamaps Món correspond to a selection of the main place names in the world and are written exclusively in the Catalan language. For minor toponyms that do not have a traditional Catalan version, the local form has been respected, adapted to the Catalan spelling, in order to make it easier for a reader in our language to read. Of the place names referring to mountains, peaks or valleys and those referring to rivers, seas or swamps, the generic part that accompanies the main name has been translated into Catalan.

Pintamaps Món wants to collaborate in the dissemination and maintenance of knowledge of place names in their Catalan form (exotoponymy).

The toponymic selection contains the names of the states and their capitals, the main cities and urban agglomerations and the most significant landforms and hydronyms. It also includes other names such as places that are part of the World Heritage Site due to their natural uniqueness and many names of the marine environment. The application has a playful and didactic option that allows you to hide the toponyms and play guessing them. When you hover over the question marks that replace them, the hidden geographical names are displayed.

It should be noted that the graphic forms proposed in Catalan are currently being validated by the Toponymy Commission of Catalonia and will be updated according to the progress of this review.
